Skygazing at the Cathedral

Telescopes sprouted on the south side of the Cathedral today (Monday 9 May) when the Guildford Astronomical Society took up stations to watch a rare astronomical event.

They were watching the progress of Mercury across the sun – an event which only happens around 14 times a century, and which is next timetabled for 2019.

The event on Monday afternoon was set to last more than 7 hours and the Society’s members brought a wide array of equipment to watch it in style.
