Oral History is a hugely important aspect of the People’s Cathedral Project. Hearing the recollections people have of the early days of this wonderful building is inspiring and brings the heritage of this space into a personal context.
We are lucky to have a team of dedicated volunteers listening, recording and transcribing precious memories for use in our new interpretation scheme and in educational workshops.
It was one of our volunteers who suggested we invite Barbara to Guildford Cathedral to take a trip down memory lane.
Barbara had recently shared her memories of getting married in the Crypt of Guildford Cathedral in June 1954.
With 30 guests and 4 bridesmaids, Reverend Doe presided over the cermony at 12. Barbara had a wedding cake made by Lyons and the wedding breakfast was held at the Lion Hotel in Guildford – it was closed in 1956 and replaced initially by Woolworths before becoming the White Lion Walk in the 1970’s.
Barbara was delighted to visit the Cathedral and even brought along one of her bridesmaids, Sheila! It was a magical experience talking about the changes to the Cathedral and the current work.
Walking down to the Crypt and standing on the steps were their wedding photographs were taken brought back happy memories and many smiles.
It was a privilege to join Barbara and Sheila as they recounted the smell of drying concrete and the nerves of the big day.
I can’t wait to share these memories with the wider community.
