Archive Item of the Week: The Choir on the Road

Welcome to Archive Item of the Week:  where we delve into Guildford Cathedral Archives to highlight some of the unique items within the collection.

This week:  The Touring Choir.  Our People’s Cathedral Archivist takes brings you an interesting archive item that sheds life on life in the choir.

Guildford Cathedral Choirs is a well-respected and renowned choir and year after year they produce outstanding musicians, many of whom go on to very successful musical careers.  This is all down to the dedication of our Organist & Master of the Choristers, Sub Organists and Organ Scholars over the years.

As a result of having such talented musicians in our midst, they get the opportunity to travel around the globe on tours representing Guildford Cathedral and the musical tradition here as well as showing off their incredible talent.

Within the archive we have an interesting record of all the antics of the Cathedral Choirs and just where they have been in the world.  Below is an interesting record of just some of the amazing locations they have toured.

In 1970 the Cathedral Choir went on a tour to Jersey to great acclaim:

In 1988 the Choir went further afield and went on a tour to Canada, where connections with Canada were further cemented.

And the Choir was well received as shown by this interesting document listing the press reaction.

And finally we have a lovely poster from 2009 when the Choir were in Italy.

All in all our Cathedral Choirs are a very talented group of people and we are so proud of them travelling around the world performing and representing themselves and the Cathedral – well done all involved!
