Archive Item of the Week: Continuing the Choral Tradition

Welcome to Archive item of the week: where we delve into Guildford Cathedral Archives to highlight some of the unique items within the collection.

Music plays an important role in the life of the Cathedral, and Cathedral’s up and down the county can boast excellent Cathedral Choirs singing beautiful choral works.

We have focused on the unique archive items we have within our collection that relate to the history and setting up of the Cathedral Choir (you can re-read this post here)

The focus of this Archive Item of the Week explores the next stage in the history of the Cathedral Choir, the launching of the Girls’ Choir.

In March 2003 the Girls’ Choir was launched at the Guildhall in Guildford.

Within the archive we have items that relate to the launch, we have the official booklet from the event

And also this intriguing document relating to the installation of the Girl Choristers that happened in June 2003.

A year after a review was conducted regarding the Girl Choristers, to ensure the success of the choristers and to celebrate the successes of the past year.

Thankfully the Girls’ Choir has proved a resounding success ever since and they have gone on from strength to strength, thanks to all the hard work by the Organist & Master of the Choristers, Sub Organists and Organ Scholars over the years.
