Welcome to Archive Item of the Week: Where we delve into the archives to highlight some of the unique items within the collection.
This Week: Schools. Our People’s Cathedral Archivist shares an interesting item demonstrating the connection between schools and the Cathedral.
Throughout Guildford Cathedral’s history we have always prided ourselves on the connection we have with the schools in the Diocese, and as you can imagine there are a great number of schools within the Diocese of Guildford.
We have regularly hosted schools up at the Cathedral for annual prize giving’s, carol concerts, leaver’s services and for special services.
Many of the schools around the Diocese have a great deal of history and are much older than the Cathedral building – and indeed older than the Diocese itself – and it is always special when one of these schools choses to celebrate their history and heritage up at the Cathedral with us.
The Royal School in Haslemere did just that in 1966 when they reached the 125th anniversary of their Foundation, although in 1966 it went by the name of The Royal Naval School, Haslemere.
Within our Collections we have the Service Book from this very special Service. We can glimpse into this special celebration, see who was present and the hymns and readings that were chosen for this ceremony.
Now in its 177th year we hope to be able to celebrate the next big anniversary with the School in the future.
