Things happening at Guildford Cathedral in Lent

Lent is a season of significance for all Christians. At Guildford Cathedral it is a time for gathering to learn, reflect and worship as we journey towards Holy Week and Easter –itself a time of celebration, new life and hope. Whatever you decide to give up during Lent –   (chocolate perhaps!) do join us for a variety of services and special events which will take place during this season of reflection and preparation.  The People’s Cathedral is ready to welcome you!

1.Ash Wednesday

Wednesday 1 March 7pm

As we begin our journey through Lent, leading us to the foot of the cross and ultimately to the resurrection, this Eucharist sets the focus on reflection and self-examination. The imposition of ashes is a central act during the Eucharist; the choir will be singing Miserere by James Macmillan

2. A focus on the History of Mental Health Care in Surrey

Thursday 2 March: 2pm

Mental Health is a growing problem in our age, join us for an opportunity to find out more about the changing attitudes to this debilitating illness and treatment with this fascinating free talk by Julian Pooley from the Surrey History Centre.

3. Vivace Chorus Concert

Saturday 4 March 7.30pm 

A rich programme of music which is serene, intense and beautiful – including one of  Mozart’s finest choral works, Mass in C Minor; as well as  Barber’s poignant Adagio for Strings and Howells Requiem which was written in response to personal loss.

4. Free Coffee Concert

Thursday 9 March 11.15am – 12 noon

The talented local Fb Pocket Orchestra perform ragtime and popular dances from the 1920s and 1930s.  All welcome to join us for this joyful morning of free music as part of our regular programme of community concerts, with free coffee served from 10.30am.

 5. Lent Lectures

Thursday 9, 16, 23, 30 March & 6 April, 7.45pm

Creation to New Creation: A series of free talks and discussions exploring the biblical visions of creation.  Come and explore how God’s creative activity shapes our imagination, activity, identity and challenges us to we live responsibly in caring for the earth. Each session concludes with the tranquillity of Choral Compline at 9pm.

6. Mothering Saturday Crafting Event

Saturday 25 March, 12-2pm

Celebrating ‘Mothering Weekend’ by joining us for a relaxed and happy occasion, presenting the opportunity to make beautiful things for the women in our families and community. There will be crafts for all ages, the opportunity to relax and enjoy a hand massage alongside other activities. Admission is free.

7.  Holy Week

Sunday 9- Sunday 16 April

Palm Sunday (9th) starts our week as we remember Jesus’ triumphal into Jerusalem, we take a journey to explore the events leading up to Easter through story, prayer and craft activities (Wednesday 12 April), as we prepare for Maundy Thursday (13th), Good Friday (14th) and Holy Saturday (15th)  culminating in the most important day in the church year on Easter Day (16th).

Guildford Cathedral is an accessible and peaceful place of welcome, worship, engagement and inspiration.  We are very much open for business, despite under-going major refurbishment, largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Do come to visit us and see for yourself what how The Peoples Cathedral is working for the well-being of the community it serves.
